Let's Do the Math for the Boss: How Much Operating Cost Can MVR Evaporation Crystallization Actually Save in a Year?
When putting in an evaporation crystallization system, management's most concerned questions are always two: how much will it cost? How long to recover? This article uses a general calculation framework to help you understand this account clearly. The numbers vary by project, but the algorithm is general.
1. What is the big cost chunk of an evaporation system?
In the life-cycle cost of an evaporation crystallization system, energy consumption typically accounts for more than 60% of operating costs; the rest is labor, maintenance, consumables, and depreciation. So whether it "saves money" core depends on the evaporation energy consumption per ton of water.
Commonly used industry reference magnitudes (subject to actual measurement):
Single-effect evaporation: evaporating 1 ton of water consumes about 1 ton of fresh steam;
Three-effect evaporation: about 0.35-0.4 tons of steam;
MVR evaporation: mainly consumes electricity, electricity consumption per ton of water typically in the 20-40 kWh range (floating with material boiling point rise and temperature-rise design differences).
Roughly calculated at common industrial steam price 200-300 yuan/ton and electricity price 0.6-0.8 yuan/kWh, MVR's energy cost per ton of water is often only one-tenth to one-sixth of traditional single-effect evaporation — this is the book logic of "using electricity to replace steam."
2. A simplified calculation example
Assume a project: evaporation volume 10 tons/hour, annual operation 7200 hours (about 300 days), i.e., annual evaporated water volume 72,000 tons.
Scheme A: Three-effect evaporation
Steam consumption 0.38 tons per ton of water, annual steam consumption about 27,400 tons;
At steam price 250 yuan/ton, annual steam cost about 6.85 million yuan;
Plus supporting operating costs such as circulating cooling water and vacuum system.
Scheme B: MVR evaporation
Electricity consumption 30 kWh per ton of water, annual electricity consumption about 2.16 million kWh;
At electricity price 0.65 yuan/kWh, annual electricity cost about 1.4 million yuan;
Small amount of supplementary steam and circulating-water electricity consumption calculated separately.
The annual energy-cost gap between the two schemes is on the order of 5 million yuan. Even if MVR's initial investment is higher by several million yuan, the investment payback period is often only 1-2 years — this is exactly the economic motivation for a large number of existing evaporation units to undergo MVR energy-saving retrofits.
Note: the above is an illustrative framework calculation. Real projects must recalculate using your plant's actual steam price, electricity price, and material boiling point rise — especially materials with large boiling point rise will significantly push up MVR electricity consumption. Jiangsu Gaojie Energy-Saving Equipment Group, at the project assessment stage, issues detailed energy-consumption comparison calculations based on actual operating conditions, calculating the payback period to the precision of single-digit months.
3. Besides the energy account, don't forget three hidden benefits
Boiler supporting cost: not going MVR may require building/expanding a boiler; fuel, environmental, safety procedures, and boiler-operator labor are all money;
Carbon asset benefits: the carbon emission reduction corresponding to energy savings is a real asset under carbon trading and dual-control energy-consumption assessments;
Environmental assessment and compliance: reducing gas and coal combustion makes environmental procedures and park access smoother.
4. When is this account most cost-effective?
Large evaporation volume (generally the larger the better);
Long annual operating hours, continuous production;
High steam price or insufficient steam source at your plant;
Reasonable electricity price, feasible power-capacity expansion;
Material boiling point rise within a reasonable range.
Conversely, if evaporation volume is small, production is intermittent, and steam is nearly free, the comprehensive economy of multi-effect evaporation may be better — which is exactly why a calculation must be done before selection rather than following the trend to MVR.
The investment decision of an evaporation crystallization system is essentially an arithmetic problem of "energy economics." Once the four variables of steam/electricity price, evaporation volume, operating hours, and material characteristics are determined, the answer is basically determined.
